In many ways you have captured my big struggle with metamodernism, that it is defined from instead of being its own thing, and includes staggering amounts of handwaving.

It seems the core issue is twofold:

- Contemporary life ought to have delivered abundance and bliss, yet it is recognizably a hellhole of loneliness, depression, extraction and environmental depredation, rendering modernism (the idea of technological progress, not the 20th century movement) deeply suspect.

- Postmodernism, for all its weird writing, turned out to be correct. We are in a surveillance state, capitalism territorializes, and society is spectacle and simulacrum; a hugely depressing realization.

Metamodernism is a spectrum of “turn back the clockers” who want to reset the dial either back to the progress narrative or even further to the mystical mooshed together with syncretists who want quantum consciousness or the dharma of emergence.

It is not an intellectual movement, it is a vibe.

That doesn’t make it wrong. People are deeply unrooted (deracinated per Weil), and they are earnestly trying to thread a needle that has no eye. Postmodernism happened. Quantum physics happened. Two world wars happened. God died (and we killed them).

I am choosing a philosophy of rootedness, particularity and place as my cope. Perhaps I am meta-modern, too!

An excellent overview of Metamodernism, plus a particularly good resource / list of future reading materials. Thanks, Jonah.
