I recently gave a talk at Life Itself Research on the intellectual history of the Metacrisis: the idea that planetary challenges like ecological crisis and AI risk need to be thought of in a unified way, with economic or cultural root causes.
I discuss - in a highly condensed way! - different definitions of Metacrisis in recent discourse, the history of that specific term, and the broader history of related ideas. Within 19th and 20th century philosophy, I highlight the Marxist and Phenomenological traditions as especially relevant in framing current discussions
